MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 31, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Omnicell, Inc. (NASDAQ: OMCL), a leading provider of medication and supply management solutions and analytics software for healthcare facilities, today announced that nationally-ranked Hackensack University Medical Center (HackensackUMC), the largest provider of inpatient and outpatient services in New Jersey, selected Omnicell as its exclusive provider of automated medication management solutions throughout the 775-bed hospital. After an evaluation of competitive solutions, HackensackUMC selected Omnicell's G4 platform to improve pharmacy and nursing workflow and enhance overall patient safety. The hospital will also implement the Omnicell Anesthesia Workstation™ G4 in the operating rooms to automate processes for improving charge capture.

Committed to providing the most advanced patient care, HackensackUMC has been listed as the number one hospital in New Jersey and one of the top four New York metro area hospitals in the 2012-13 annual U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings, also receiving nine national rankings and four New York Metro Area rankings. It has also been recognized for six consecutive years as one of America's 50 Best Hospitals by HealthGrades. HackensackUMC's selection of Omnicell's G4 medication administration technology is the most recent example of its commitment to advanced medical care. Prior to its Omnicell investment, the hospital fully deployed an electronic health record and is currently implementing a bedside barcode administration system.

HackensackUMC evaluated several vendors in a thorough process with collaboration of pharmacy, nursing, IT and radiology departments. HackensackUMC is a Magnet® recognized hospital for nursing excellence and it was important in the evaluation process to select solutions that nurses believe would improve workflows and increase patient satisfaction.

"Our previous medication administration technology met our workflow needs when initially implemented. However, over time we needed a solution that will address patient specific medications and offer more robust inventory and data management processes," said Nilesh Desai, RPh., MBA Director of Pharmacy HackensackUMC. "We elected to go with Omnicell for a system wide conversion because we felt they could take us to the next level of improving quality, patient safety and efficiency. Omnicell's company philosophy, current solution set and product roadmap for the future all align with our mission that 'the patient comes first.'"

HackensackUMC will begin a progressive six to eight month rollout of the following Omnicell solutions:

  • OmniRx® G4 Automated Medication Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs) throughout the nursing floors, including the Integrated Medication Label Printer that allows nurses to print patient-specific labels right from the ADC during medication issue. The ADCs also include new Touch & Go™ G4 biometric ID system, designed with state-of-the-art biometrics hardware and software to improve efficiency and security.
  • Anesthesia Workstation™ G4, an automated dispensing cabinet for the operating room that allows for secure, convenient access to drugs required during surgery and documentation of controlled substances while relieving the anesthesiologist of the tedious task of counting medications.
  • Controlled Substance Management (CSM) that uses a shared database between pharmacy, the operating room and nursing cabinets to track and monitor narcotic movement throughout the hospital, and provides true closed-loop tracking for dispensing controlled substances. All controlled substances are received into the central pharmacy and dispensed to the cabinets on the floors, mixing stations or directly to a patient with a label for safety. CSM facilitates dispensing reconciliation and ensures a complete audit trail throughout the medication distribution process.
  • SinglePointe™ software to handle and store up to 100 percent of a patient's medications within the automated dispensing cabinets to improve pharmacy and nursing workflow efficiency and reduce the chance for medication errors or missed doses.
  • Anywhere RN™ solution, which allows nurses to remotely review and select medication orders needed from the cabinet at their own workstations to save time and minimize interruptions that could lead to medication administration errors. Nurses can also waste narcotics at the bedside rather than returning to the cabinet to allow for more time on patient care.
  • OmniDispenser™ module for the management of controlled substances in the ADCs that helps create a safe and secure medication management process that can eliminate the need for nursing countbacks and will help the hospital reduce administration errors in the emergency room.
  • Pandora® Analytics provides insight into clinical operations, helping to identify potential diversion, ensure compliance, and monitor nursing processes such as medication administration.

In November 2011, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released new guidelines for medication administration that require time-sensitive medications to meet the 30-minute window before or after the scheduled time for all scheduled medication administration[1]. HackensackUMC expects to be able to better comply with these regulations using the integrated Medication Label Printer to label critical IVs and antibiotics, in addition to other patient medications, for more timely and secure administration. Additionally, the G4 platform offers a single unified database across the continuum of medications maintained in automated dispensing cabinets, accessed through an intuitive user interface. The single database decreases the risk of human error and saves significant pharmacy time by eliminating the need for repetitive entry of drug formularies and rules in multiple locations.

"HackensackUMC is a very forward-thinking hospital with a reputation for high-quality care and we look forward to collaborating with them to enhance patient safety," said J. Christopher Drew, executive vice president, field operations at Omnicell. "Patient safety and quality are two of the main priorities of the hospital, and Omnicell shares the same passion and commitment to reducing medication errors. We work closely with our customers to provide automation solutions that optimize the accurate delivery of medications while improving clinician efficiency."
